s i l e n t h e a r t Silentheart hated feeling plump, especially when cats gossiped and wondered who the father was - not even Silentheart herself knew - and how embarrassing that was for her. She couldn't even discuss who she thought the father was, or tell either Phantomheart or Desertstorm she thought they could be the father (though she could never remember actually mating with either of them (then again, she was never good at remembering things)).
Silentheart sighed silently, and padded to the nursery. She knew the kits were due this week, at least, if not today. She ached and felt sore all over. If anything was certain, it was that she was going to be a mother to at least three kits, so said Terncry.
As she shredded some moss from her nest, she felt a sharp pain. A look of panic came to her face - how was she supposed to tell anyone she was giving birth?! She lay down, as she'd been shown, and breathed slowly.
Oh dear, StarClan. Let someone come in here and see me.

The nursery entrance suddenly rustled and a lean black tom pushed his way in, his eyes flashing in the gloom of the den. "Silentheart!"he meowed, squeezing his way through and settling next to her. "What happened? You didn't tell me you were having kits!"Pantherclaw meowed with a desperate tone in his voice, his eyes full of hurt.

s i l e n t h e a r t Silentheart gave Pantherclaw a slightly withering look, as if to say "Well you know I totally would have told you but do you forget I'M MUTE?!". Then, pain raced through her again, and she clenched her teeth together.
The pain passed and a little wet thing was beside her tail. She stared at it in disbelief; it looked just like her. She picked it up by it's scruff, and licked it. It mewed, to her relief - the kit wasn't mute. She put the kit in the curve of her stomach and she started suckling. It was an odd sensation.
There was a second wave of pain, which also passed easily. Another kit that looked just like her. She copied what she did with the first kit, and checked it's gender - A son! she would have cried out in joy, but, another wave of pain came.
This time, two kits came out at once - another, just like her, and an odd pale tabby. A thought struck her - Desertstorm was the father. She'd have to tell him straight away. She picked them both up - two little daughters. They were cleaned and placed beside their siblings.
The last and worst wave of pain passed through her, and to her disbelief again, a pure black kit came out. Now, was Phantomheart the father? Silentheart was confused. She picked up the kit, and saw it was a male. She cleaned him and placed him beside his siblings.
Five kits. Heck, how am I supposed to cope with five? she thought, and she turned to Pantherclaw, and gave him a sorrowful look - she knew he liked her, but her heart was torn between three toms - how could she cope?

Pantherclaw grew wide eyed as the kits were starting to come out. "I'll get you some moss,"he meowed quickly, exiting the den. He felt too squimish to watch Silentheart give birth. He quickly found fresh moss in the forest and soaked it in clean water. His mind racing with emotions for Silentheart, he quickly bounded back to the nursery. As he squeezed in, he saw five young, mewling kits at the queen's side. "They're beauriful!

s i l e n t h e a r t Silentheart smiled ruefully, and looked at the kits. Suckling was an odd sensation, at least, in her opinion. She could see cats crowding at the door of the nursery, and the other kits staring in awe at the new youngsters.
Silentheart picked up the third born, and licked her thorougly. She then looked at Pantherclaw, and then back at the kit, expecting him to give her a name. Well, she expected him to give them all names. She felt guilty - any of the three toms could be the father, but, she felt Pantherclaw deserved it most - though he had a little mean streak, he was a good tom.

Pantherclaw quietly settled beside Silentheart, looking at the kits with a mixture of sadness and content. He was happy that Silentheart had five healthy kits, but he felt his heart torn since these probably weren't his kits. His ear pricked when Silentheart gestured to the third, black and white kit. "You want me to name her?"he guessed, having been used to Silentheart's noncommital gestures. Pantherclaw gave her a grateful lick and gave the little she-kit a tender nose touch around the ear. "Hm, how about Lilykit?"the black tom suggested.
The young she-kit let out a tiny mewl and snuggled against her mother. Her eyes remained closed tightly but she could feel the warmth of her mother and her siblings that squeezed beside her.

s i l e n t h e a r t "Lilykit..."
The name floated around in her head as she stared at her daughter. Then, she looked up at Pantherclaw, and nodded. She approved of the name. She looked at the other four kits, and her smile faded into a frown. She stood up, a little wobbly, and padded outside. A stray leaf was blowing around. She jumped, and grabbed it, and walked back into the nursery. She placed the leaf on the third kit, another female, just like her. "Leafkit." she thought, hoping Pantherclaw would know what she meant putting a leaf on the kit.
Then, she pointed to the fourth kit, and then up at the sky. It was clear, and blue, like it should. The fourth kit would be Skykit. The other two, the males, well, that was harder to decide.

Pantherclaw purred as Silentheart nodded in approval. He gave Lilykit a small nuzzle, watching the young she-cat bury her head deeper into her mother's fur. Pantherclaw watched as Silentheart seemed to contemplate, then ears perked up as she returned into the nursery with a stray leaf that was placed lightly on another kit's head. "Leafkit?"he guessed. Then the black tom watched as the queen pointed to the other kit that looked like her and gaze up. "Cloudkit? Oh no, wait. Skykit!"Pantherclaw translated. ]"Those are beautiful names,"he murmured, giving her a small nuzzle. Then the warrior quickly drew back, remembering that he was not her mate. "What about the others? Are you going to let the father name them?" As he said this, his yellow eyes were clouded with hurt.

s i l e n t h e a r t The new queen looked at her two sons with slight disdain, and shrugged. Names for them just weren't happening, and she didn't want a tom to name them who might not be their father.
With a slight sigh, the female curled up next to her kits, arranging them neatly in the curve of her belly. She licked each one gently as they mewled and suckled. They were so small and delicate - Silentheart was going to have her paws full when they got bigger - not being able to call them over to tell them how much she loved them or have giggly conversations with her daughters or chat about hunting to her sons or being able to shout their names when they were made warriors. It made her heart sink to look at them and how much she wouldn't be able to tell them.
Terncry, with a caring look on her face, ushered everyone away to leave Pantherclaw and Silentheart together. She nodded to Pantherclaw, expecting him to act like the father of the kits - even if no one knew who the father was, they'd need a father figure.

Pantherclaw silently watched as Silentheart gathered up her kits, nuzzling them each. Even though he was still a bit saddened and mad that he wasn't the father, he'd love these kits anyways. He noticed Silentheart seemed a little disconcerted and gave her a reassuring nuzzle in the ears. "Hey don't worry. You'll be a great mother. And I'll help, even if I'm not the father, I'll love these kits like they're my own,"he murmured, giving her a lick.

s i l e n t h e a r t With a rueful smile, Silentheart looked at her kits. It was going to be hard - Terncry and Dandelionwhisker would have to help her teach them the warrior code and keep them in line. They were all so small and helpless.
Returning the nuzzle, Silentheart lay her head on her paws, and thought of all the things she couldn't say to her children. Life was unfair - StarClan was unfair, even! What had her parents done wrong that Silentheart didn't deserve a voice like everyone else? Was it something that Silentheart was going to do? Was it this that she had been punished for? Or was StarClan just using a cruel irony on her.
Her green eyes returned to the balls of fluff beside her. They had dried up and stopped suckling and lay beside her in a light slumber. She could hardly believe it - it was like a dream to her - her kits... she really had kits, like she had always wanted to, but with no proper mate and no knowing who the father was... it was making the queen's head spin.
