"StarClan gets a good laugh out of you whenever you stumble along like a blind kit, but other than that..."
Iceheart noticed Featherwhisker's eyes on the sky, and he looked, expecting to see the solid ceiling of storm clouds that threatened to burst but inevitably wouldn't -- instead he saw peeks of the night sky, gleaming stars gaping at them from between stone-colored clouds.
he wanted to make a childish comment -- see, StarClan's laughing right now! -- but instead, he sidled beside Featherwhisker. somehow, the site of the stars shimmering along the storm made him sober in a way the trespasser hadn't.
it was beautiful -- and it struck a note inside of him.
"We see plenty of stars out here in DawnClan. We have the most open skies of all, don't we?" he sighed. "But sometimes it's the smallest glimpse of stars that get me the most. Like StarClan's telling us something..." he tilted his head, deaf to his babbling.
his other self seethed at him, but he ignored it. he couldn't explain his mood, his thoughts, his feelings -- but why should he?

Featherwhisker purred at his comment. They were both lacking in the graceful skill when running. She was just about to look away from the stars when Iceheart started to meow.
"We see plenty of stars out here in DawnClan. We have the most open skies of all, don't we?" That was true. No other clan had quite the view of StarClan as they did. It made many DawnClan cats feel as if they were somehow closer to StarClan. Was it true though? Were StarClan closer to DawnClan just because they could see the stars more clearly than through the trees of FireClan or MoonClan? She somehow doubted that.
"But sometimes it's the smallest glimpse of stars that get me the most. Like StarClan's telling us something..."
"Maybe they are." She murmured. "They're always there, but who knows when they're trying to tell us something. Do they even have the power to stop a clan when they're determined to fight for their clan?"
There were many times where there was a fight on the cusp, and it looked as if StarClan was trying to stop it. Nothing could though, nothing but a leader's orders could fully stop a clan when there was anger running through their blood and that blood was pounding through each cat's ears.

he noticed Featherwhisker glance at the sky, and he didn't feel as embarrassed as he thought he should have. look at him, babbling like an apprentice! but she seemed as serious as he was, so he felt at ease inside as well as out.
"Maybe they are. They're always there, but who knows when they're trying to tell us something. Do they even have the power to stop a clan when they're determined to fight for their clan?"
he could see her eyes flicker with thoughts he wasn't quite privy to. however, he thought he knew what she was thinking about. StarClan had infinite knowledge, wisdom, compassion, and love for the cats of all four Clans, but they couldn't physically protect them.
the dead couldn't intervene with mortal affairs -- and did they want to? the Clans were full of cats with tough histories, tougher futures. but experience was what made cats amazing warriors. at least, that's what Iceheart thought.
he thought of what Featherwhisker said. "I don't know. Blood was spilled when most of StarClan were young cats. Blood will probably always be shed, whether it's for justice or evil. Maybe they want us to experience all there is to being a warrior?"
maybe it was foolish or sacriligeous to think that way, but Iceheart didn't think StarClan was perfect. he had faith in them, he believed they watched him and sometimes walked with him, but he did not believe they were perfect.
there were souls in the sky -- souls of cats like him and Featherwhisker. some better, some worse, some identical. right?

"I don't know. Blood was spilled when most of StarClan were young cats. Blood will probably always be shed, whether it's for justice or evil. Maybe they want us to experience all there is to being a warrior?" Featherwhisker admired his words and nodded.
"How would be as wise as StarClan if we didn't experience everything to make us that way?" She asked no one. "Would we truly be who were are without the drive to protect our clanmates at the cost of our lives?"
Featherwhisker glanced back towards the sky. "Would we truly know the meaning of friendship, family and..." with a glance towards Iceaheart, "love?" She let her heart come through her mouth, no intention of stopping it. "Would we appreciate our ancestors if they had not fought for the right to all of these things.
"In all honesty, I think they're just like us. They've only moved on to a better place where there is peace. A... sort of reward for all the fighting for love, friendship and peace they did when alive."Featherwhisker let her voice trail off and felt the heat rise to her face. She had been rambling off her thoughts left and right, just like she had done as a kit. Of course, the cats she had talked to had only listened to her to please her. They hadn't truly been listening, not like Iceheart seemed to be.

"How would be as wise as StarClan if we didn't experience everything to make us that way? Would we truly be who were are without the drive to protect our clanmates at the cost of our lives?"
"I doubt it," he meowed after brief consideration. "We'd be like the kittypets in their hutches. No scars, no honor, no anything."
"Would we truly know the meaning of friendship, family and..."
he stopped with her, tilting his head. what...
"love?"
he blushed again, but he nodded. he wanted to hear this.
"Would we appreciate our ancestors if they had not fought for the right to all of these things. In all honesty, I think they're just like us. They've only moved on to a better place where there is peace. A... sort of reward for all the fighting for love, friendship and peace they did when alive."
"I think so too. We Clan cats go through alot of hardship. And we do get rewards -- great friends and allies, a life of freedom, and, you know, like you said..." he shuffled his paws. "Love." the word sounded harsh in his voice, and it felt foreign on his tongue. how did Featherwhisker say it so breezily? he felt like it weighed more than ten mountains!
"I mean..." he floundered.
Great. Beautiful, interesting flow of speech suddenly gone. he felt as though she were waiting, though, so he went on, "I mean, not every cat who goes to StarClan gets to experience that, though, do they?"
Jeez, Iceheart...
oh well.

Featherwhisker frowned slightly as he seemed to flounder with his words, more specifically the word love. That got Featherwhisker thinking. Was love even real? A few moons ago she wouldn't hesitate to say no. After what she had witnessed with her mother and father... she wanted nothing to do with love. But now that she had truly met Iceheart, maybe toms really could be kind. Maybe there was hope for love... Featherwhisker pushed the thought away.
Featherwhisker brushed her tail along Iceheart's flank. "I get what you mean." Hoping he would find his words again. "Cat's die young, not all of them are as wise as our medicine cats and leaders." Hoping to lighten the mood Featherwhisker grinned. "I'll race you to the top of that rise!" She said, eyes glowing with laughter. This was a chance to see who really was the faster runner.

Iceheart felt utter relief when Featherwhisker pressed her tail to his flank. Guess she knows what I meant. he smiled gratefully at her.
then her face and tone turned playful.
"Oh, you're on," he meowed brightly, lashing his tail playfully. "Guess we'll see who can back up their big talk after all!"
he looked to the rise, eyes glowing.
"Ready... set..." he paused, sharing a final glance with her.
"Go!"
he didn't look to see if she'd taken off; he flew.

((Hope its okay if I slightly god-mod here, its nothing major))
Featherwhisker bunched her long silver legs in anticipation. The stars and moon overhead were giving a little bit of light on the pathway.
'Ready' She wiggled her back legs, hoping to loosen them up.
'...set' She sheathed and unsheathed her claws, she was so ready for this run.
'Go!' And they were off. Featherwhisker felt the wind through her fur, the warm earth beneath her paws and the moon's glow through her eyes. There was no need to be quiet now so she let loose, paws pounding against the earth beside Iceheart. The two cats were side by side. The two cats were evenly matched for some time, but Featherwhisker noticed that Iceheart was beginning to gain the speed that she could not muster out of her legs.

he was moving like the wind. wings were carrying him -- were they? it sure felt like his shoulderblades had extended, dropping feathers around their pounding paws. he was a dark blur, her a pale one, but he noticed that their strides were even.
No! I can't let her win! determination surged through him, mingling with the adrenaline in his blood and causing him to summon the inner store of strength -- and speed. his legs scissored. and he found himself ahead of Featherwhisker -- not by much, but yes, he'd win at this rate.
he swept up the incline, welcoming the very slight exercise of his leg muscles. coming to the top, he let out a single heavy breath, excitement making his eyes shine gloriously.
"I won!" he shouted. birds scattered from a patch of grass behind him, only making him laugh. who cared? he had won!
he turned back to Featherwhisker, close behind him, smiling with cockiness and charm.
"Well, whaddya make of that?"

The rise was so close, and Iceheart was in the lead. If only she had made the race longer. She was a better long distance runner than she was a short distance. Featherwhisker groaned as the tom reached the rise before she did. He had won, she would never hear the end of this. She was about to slow down when he let out a yowl of joy and turned towards here.
She couldn't stop in time, luckily she had slowed down a little bit, he was right in front of her. She slammed into him, sending them both flying down the other side of the rise.
Whoops.
She felt the breath knock out of her as she landed, legs entangled with Iceheart's. She lay there breathing for a few moments in silence, wondering what Iceheart thought of her clumsy move. Then, without intending to, she burst out laughing.
"Sorry!" She managed to meow between bouts of laughter.

shaking his head in triumph as Featherwhisker sped forward, he prepared a shrill taunt -- when things changed. fast.
Featherwhisker had slowed considerably, but she was undeniably still coming straight for him. he wished he'd had time to react -- but she flew straight into him, knocking both of them backwards. one minute, Iceheart felt grass brush his back, sides, and bits of his belly as he flew with Featherwhisker down the rise.
finally, they stopped. the momentum fled. he lay, limbs a tangled mess along with Featherwhisker's. she was silent for awhile -- she could just see a glimmer of one of her blue eyes.
then, she let out a laugh. "Sorry!"
he was too stunned to reply for a moment, before the laughter gusted out of him like a wild windstorm.
"StarClan, Featherwhisker," he wheezed roughly. "You lose in so many ways." the purr in his voice made him cough on his laughter.

Featherwhisker grinned in bliss. She hadn't felt this aloof in a long time. Not since her dad left the clan. "I guess I still need to work on my stopping." She purred, nuzzling his jaw for a moment before standing up.
"I'll win one day," She mewed, shaking out her fur. "And when I do, you'll be coughing on my dust."
She looked down in horror, suddenly realizing that she may have hurt him. "Are you okay?" She asked, sniffing his legs and body for any signs of blood. "I didn't hurt you did I?" She asked, nudging his head aside so she could see if there was anything on his neck.

he hid his pleasure when she briefly nuzzled his jaw. "I'll say!" he laughed, blushing as he rolled over shakily and touched his nose to her cheek. the feel of her fur was overwhelmingly lovely -- soft, sweet, warm. he pulled away almost reluctantly to retort weakly.
"I'll win one day, and when I do, you'll be coughing on my dust."
he smirked at her, whiskers quivering. "Oh, really? When that day comes, Featherwhisker, I'll be bones in my grave or I'll be so old I'll fall apart if I try to run!"
by the time he'd finished snarking, she had grown horrified. "Are you okay? I didn't hurt you, did I?"
he laughed as she checked him for blood, tilting his head back to see if there were bones protruding from his body. he stood, shaking himself off.
"Of course not, Featherwhisker! I'd be more worried that I hurt you!" he paused, glancing her over timidly. "I didn't, did I?"

Featherwhisker sighed with relief when she knew that he was okay. How horrible would it have been if he had gotten hurt because she hadn't been able to slow down after their race. What a thing to admit to your leader. Sorry Haggarstar, I hurt your warrior because we were having fun and running all over the territory. With her deep breath, Featherwhisker got a whiff of Iceheart's scent. It was strangely comforting, almost soothing her into relaxation.
'Of course not, Featherwhisker! I'd be more worried that I hurt you!'
Featherwhisker frowned slightly. "I don't think so." She honestly hadn't checked yet, she was too worried about Iceheart to notice and blood on herself or pain.
The silver she-cat gave her self a once over and deemed her self fit. It wasn't until she moved her front left paw to move closer to Iceheart that she felt a sudden ice sharp flash of pain.
"Ouch!" Her eyes widened, she actually had gotten hurt? She turned her blue gaze down towards the paw that was causing a problem. Everything looked okay. But that didn't mean anything. She very well may have sprained or pulled something. Slowly, Featherwhisker tested it on the ground again and winced. Still hurt.
"That's just embarrassing." She mumbled, avoiding Iceheart's gaze.

it was his fear. Iceheart looked, plainly surprised, to the paw Featherwhisker was testing. she had seemed fine, but the wince in her face was unmistakable.
his ears laid back in shame.
"That's just embarrassing," she muttered.
"For me. I can't believe I hurt you!" he pulled his own paw away. "I'm sure it was my fault. I mean, jeez, you could've stopped if I hadn't pushed myself out in front of you." he sighed.
and now he felt like a jackass. he had taunted her and boasted about his meager win. their race had been for fun. and now... he'd hurt her!
his eyes swept guiltily over the paw. "Do you want me to help you back to camp?" If she's hurt, I want her to get looked at as soon as possible!

"Your fault?" She squeaked, meeting his green gaze with her horror filled one. "No, this is my fault, not yours. I was just clumsy." She looked down at her silver paw and watched as the lights and shadows danced across it.
When the grey tom mentioned going back to camp she panicked. "No!" She mewed, almost yelling. She then felt herself become flushed. "I mean... no. I'm fine. Honestly Iceheart!" She squirmed under his gaze. "I just... don't want to go back to camp yet." She said, turning her gaze away. "I feel like all this fun I've been having will vanish when I have to go back and see my sister... and be reminded of everything that being a warrior requires." The heat under her fur didn't vanish. This was turning out horribly. At this rate Iceheart would just leave her and think that she was the strangest she-cat he had ever had to meet.
"Let's just stay here for a bit..." She meowed, awkwardly laying down on the long grass, parting it beneath her. She sighed with relief as the weight was lifted off her paw.

despite all of his playful, teasing accusations, he shook his head. "You're not clumsy, Featherwhisker." he twisted the tip of his tail towards the base, calming himself down.
he listened to her, slowly losing his horrific feeling. she wasn't angry at him; hell, she was adamantly, determinedly telling him that she didn't want to go back to camp.
he sat down, watching her earnestly.
"No! I mean... no. I'm fine. Honestly Iceheart!" he tilted his head skeptically.
"I just... don't want to go back to camp yet." she turned from him. he blinked. "I feel like all this fun I've been having will vanish when I have to go back and see my sister... and be reminded of everything that being a warrior requires."
"Well... I understand." he watched her lie on the grass, and he felt himself nod, as if confirming all that she'd said. "I mean... Clan life is the best life we could ask for, but... it's not often grown warriors get to have fun. And... well..." he thought about her sister. hadn't she been escaping her in the first place?
he lay beside her, letting his racing heart calm. he felt at peace, and he just hoped Featherwhisker wasn't regretting not returning to camp. it was certainly getting late. he wasn't tired at all, but he didn't want to tire her out or keep her up against her will.
so he said, "So, your sister... seems like you get pretty frustrated with her." he struggled, too. he was losing his words again. but it seemed like she had too, so he felt like it was alright.

(( xD she should totally fall asleep while they're talking, then they just spend the night there xD)) Featherwhisker glanced sideways at Iceheart and got lost in his green eyes. "Yeah..." She mewed. "I'm pretty frustrated with her." Featherwhisker let her self relax as she lay on the ground next to the gray tom. It was getting rather late, and they really should be getting back to camp, but Featherwhisker would rather spend some more time talking to Iceheart.
The air around the two cats was chilling, leaving a slight coldness about the night. "She..." Featherwhisker struggled to find her words. "We're always fighting. I... I blame her and my mother when it comes to my father leaving the clan" She looked guiltily away. "and she blames me for our mother leaving..." She paused. "At least... I think that's why she's always fighting with me. We've never seen eye to eye. She always got along better with cats our own age while I always ran off to be with my father and the older cats of the clan. I think she resented me for that.
Everytime I try to reconcile with her she snaps at me and we get into another argument." She laughed warily. "It's the never ending cycle."

he paused, furrowing his brow and narrowing his green eyes. what Featherwhisker was telling him sounded neither typical nor fun. siblings weren't celebrated family members in Clans, but if it was all you had, such as Featherwhisker, then you needed to stick together.
"I'm sorry," he meowed, lashing his tail lightly. "She sounds like... well..." he didn't want to insult her sister, so he shrugged sheepishly.
but Iceheart noticed that she wasn't as alert as she had been. "Getting tired?" he asked lightly.

Featherwhisker threw her silver-gray head back and laughed at Iceheart's reluctancy to say anything bad about either sisters."You can say it." She purred. "My sister can be a mousebrain." Featherwhisker leaned her head down on her paws but tilted her head to one side so she could still see Iceheart. "But at the same time... so can I."
Without any control over it, Featherwhisker yawned, eyes watering slightly as she did so. "I guess I am a little tired." She murmured, shaking her head a bit in hope to wake up self up and stop her eyes from blurring.
"Tell me about yourself Iceheart." She pleaded, looking up into his bright green eyes. "We've been talking about myself all night and not a single thing about you."

he laughed. well, that was what he was thinking, wasn't it? "But then, so can I," she continued, and that's where his mind screeched.
"Uh, no. You can be clumsy, but you could never be mousebrained!" he said this vehemently, completely convicted. Iceheart tended to think of mousebrained cats as stupid, dense, aggravating, or otherwise just ridiculous cats.
Featherwhisker was definitely none of those. he didn't need to know her for very long to know that, he was sure.
""Tell me about yourself Iceheart." she looked directly into his eyes, and the blue of them startled him out of his convictions. "We've been talking about myself all night and not a single thing about you."
"That's what I was hoping," he teased. "I'm not nearly as interested as you. Besides, you're sleepy."

Featherwhisker rolled her eyes and leaned her head against his flank, not wanting to argue further about the topic of her brain. "That doesn't mean I don't want to hear about you." She murmured, getting lost in his rhythmic breathing. In...out...in...out the raise and fall of Iceheart's chest soothed Featherwhisker's thoughts. Was it like this for normal cats? Cats with siblings and friends within the clan? She had always hoped that she and Ashflame would one day get along, but that day was not soon.
"You're not boring." She mewed quietly, she'd never had so much fun in all her seasons. From running together through the moors to teasing each other about their running styles. Every word that came out of this tom's mouth seemed to fascinate her.
"What's your favorite color?" She asked, now listening to the beat of the tom's heart. Featherwhisker let out a soft sigh, keeping her eyes closed. She could easily fall asleep like this, and she might if she didn't move soon. Still, Featherwhisker stayed where she was. It was comforting to be lying next to Iceheart.

"What's your favorite color?"
Featherwhisker's sudden question warranted a sudden answer from Iceheart. the word "color" immediately brought his gaze to her's, and her eyes...
"Blue," he said automatically. "What's your's?"
he felt like he couldn't have had a more satisfying day. Featherwhisker, pretty young silver she-cat, and he, stubborn Iceheart, had made this otherwise boring greenleaf eve an event to remember.
at least, he would.

Featherwhisker briefly wondered why he picked such a color as blue. Blue seemed to be such an ordinary color to her. Though she had to admit, it did seem to come in a wide variety of pleasing shades.
"I'm not sure..." The silver-gray she-cat murmured, shivering slightly as a cool burst wind ruffled her fur. "I've never had the chance to think about it."
She looked around her and watched as life seemed to move around her. Off to her right there was a rabbit carefully lifting it's nose to the sky, oblivious to the two cats so near to it. Further down the hill there were birds pecking at the ground looking for their dinner or possibly even food for their young.
Featherwhisker let out a light sigh and thought about favorite colors for a few more moments. Soon she realized that Iceheart would be waiting for an answer.
"Green."
